Swedish Organizations and Authorities participating in SAR
 

MRCC Gothenburg is part of Swedish Maritime Administration's organization. SMA also provides boats, vessels and surveillance by means of pilot stations and VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) centres. The SAR Academy on the island of Arkö, off the cast coast of Sweden run by the Swedish Maritime Association (SMA).

The largest participant in SAR missions is the Swedish Lifeboat Association (SSRS), a voluntary organization with SRUs stationed along the Swedish coastline. Swedish Lifeboat Association has vessels and boats of variable sizes. An agreement between the Swedish Maritime Administration and thc SSRS was drawn up in 2001, regulating and assuring their specific participation in SAR.

SMA co-operates with five authorities. They are:

  • Swedish Coastguard - vessels, boats, cars and fixed wing aircraft
  • Swedish Defence Force - vessels, helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and radar-surveillance
  • Swedish Civil Aviation Administration - ARCC (Aeronautical Rescue Co-Ordination Centre)
  • Swedish Police Force - vessels, cars and medium multipurpose helicopters
  • Stockholm Radio - coast radio station. Provides the SAR organization with a maritime radio network system.

Furthermore, local fire brigades participate with. boats and firemen. Six selected brigades in Sweden also have so-called fire response teams, specially trained for life saving missions onboard ships.

Regional Co-Operation Committees consisting of representatives from all organizations involved in SAR have been established within every SAR Area to deal with and discuss matters such as planning, cooperation and availability of SRUs in the area. SAR exercises are also planned within these Committees and the aim is to accomplish at least one exercise per year in every SAR Area.
